Essential Oil Analysis Using Chiral Columns

Dr. Christoph Streicher in the labThe Foundation for Aromatherapy Research and Education is responsible for the quality control of Amrita’s essential oil. Employing state of the art testing procedures - using gaschromatographic analysis with standard and chiral capillary columns - we are able to guarantee the purity and natural wholeness of Amrita’s essential oils.

Gas chromatography can identify oils that have been processed, reconstituted, rectified or in other ways chemically manipulated. It also shows the variation in the natural chemical constituents - an important factor in determining the therapeutic quality of the oils.   The best GC  detectors are still inferior to the discriminatory ability and sensitivity of the trained human nose.

The chiral capillary column can distinguish between so called "nature-identical" (man-made) aromatic compounds and botanical (plant-made) compounds. A true "nature-identical" compound has the same structure as a natural plant compound, however, it differs in a characteristic of the molecules called handedness. In the man-made compound the ratio of left-handed molecules to right-handed molecules (one being the mirror image of the other) is 50:50, whereas plants usually produce one or the other in higher numbers. The handedness of the aromatic plant molecules is specific to their physiological effect.

Note: This issue of handedness lies in the fact that our bodies are subject to "backward" information and as they perform their miracles of adaptation, suspicions are raised that immune dysfunction is the actual result. D. Noah

The vast majority of essential oils produced worldwide are for the flavor, fragrance and toiletry industry - an industry which does not need a botanically pure product but rather a consistent and reasonable priced product.

The ability to identify true whole natural oils is therefore critical to anyone who wants to experience the therapeutic benefits.

Gas chromatography testing services are available to the general population for $150 per essential oil and to wholesale customers for $10 per essential oil.  A summary report accompanies the GC readout.

Education

Education
The Foundation for Aromatherapy Research & Education offers a series of classes leading to Certification. These classes give a solid introduction to aromatherapy. Students learn basic aromatherapy considerations such as the significance of Latin binomials and chemotypes to the more sophisticated use of essential oils required to blend and make recommendations for specific client profiles. The focus is on providing hands-on blending experience in all classes and on presenting the latest scientific findings on essential oils.

The certification course is divided into 4 levels, totaling 5-6 days (not successive) of course/lab work. Certification is given upon completion and presentation of a research paper.

Therapists: Learn aromatherapy to incorporate into your alternative health care practice.

Retailers: Consider having at least one of your store personnel trained in aromatherapy. Knowledgeable assistance keeps customers happy and buying.

Dr. Moms and Dr. Dads: Become an informed consumer and empower yourself to care for your family in a way that supports their optimum wellness.
