Catnip repels mosquitoes more effectively than DEET according to research conducted at Iowa State University. The report was presented at the 222^nd national meeting of the American Chemical Society in 2001. Entomologist Chris Peterson, Ph.D and Joel Coats, Ph.D. conducted the study and found nepetalacetone to be about 10 times more effective than DEET. Nepeta, commonly known as catnip, is a member of the mint family and is a perennial herb native to Europe. It now grows wild in most parts of the United States. It has been traditionally used to treat colds, fevers and cramps and was strewn on the floor to keep pests at bay.
